Yes.“Why did I say that when I’m already spread so thin? ”&nbsp;I used to say "yes" all the time, but then I’d regret it as soon as I said it. In 1999, when I was in school to become a counsellor, I was known as the “yes” man.I thought that saying "no" would mean that I was selfish and uncaring.But there was actually a deeper reason I was saying “yes” so much. I didn’t realize it until I started watching really successful people.They said no all the time. Not because they were unkind and uncaring but because they had to.That’s when I realized that all my “yeses” were a ploy to get people to like me.(Ouch. Just seeing that stings a little.)Today, I’m okay saying “no” when I need to so that I can say “yes” to my own heart. Setting boundaries is okay. Covey (1989) said that in order for us to say ‘no,’ we need to say ‘yes’ to something bigger.And I’m not worried about what people think of me. Their opinion doesn’t shatter my self-worth anymore.Don’t get me wrong! I’m not running around saying “no, no, no, no” all day long. I still believe that saying “yes” is a wonderful thing.But saying it all the time when it means saying “no” to you is a path to misery!Others may not like it, and I’m okay with that. If I can’t say “no,” what’s the point? I’d much rather get on with my day.
